Sample Press Release Format: A Guide to Writing an Effective Press Release
- Start by resolving to keep it concise and to the point. Editors will appreciate this, as they receive thousands of press releases every day.
- Make sure your headline is catchy and grabs their attention. Type it in bold, using a larger than normal font.
- Write your first paragraph in a clear and concise manner. In the first few sentences captivate the reader with newsworthy and factual content; make sure it is not a sales pitch or it will end up in the basket.
- Answer the questions "who", "what", "when", "where", "why" and "how". Include only logical and substantiated claims, excluding what you believe - we are the best or the cheapest and so on.
- It is prudent to be honest; otherwise it can come across as biased.
A good sample press release format requires that you include relevant information about your product, service or event in the body text. When writing about a product, include details on when it will be available, where you can buy it, and the cost. If you write about an event, include the date, venue and any other relevant information.
Try to quote a credible source, naming their title or position with the company. Give reasons as to why they are credible, supporting them with details of awards they have won, articles they have published, or details of their interviews. Make sure you write well, checking for grammar or spelling errors.
