Copywriting Basics -
The Psychology of Effective Selling

Good copywriting basics play on the fact that people buy because they will benefit from a product or service,
or feel good about buying it.

To understand the essential Copywriting Basics, one must understand human nature. These basic concepts emphasize the underlying reasons why people buy a product or service. Once these are clear, they can be factored into the Copy to encourage people to buy the advertised product or service.

Most buying is based on emotion rather than cold, analytical logic. This is where "good copy" comes in. It must understand how and why the product is beneficial to the user, and be packed with those benefits, compelling people to buy now, before they have time to think.

An essential aspect of copywriting basics is understanding the difference between benefits and features. A benefit is how the product improves the life of the user. A feature is what the product can do.

When writing copy, you need to understand the key benefits of your product and emphasize those benefits, not the features. An attractive site with colorful clipart and other multimedia presentations can help, of course, but your product will sell only when the user sees how it will make his life better.

To perfect your copywriting basics you need to remember to include three important things in your Copy:

  1. Give the reasons why your product is beneficial. The more reasons you give, the better the chance of a sale.

  2. Write compellingly, to capture your readers' interest and keep them so intrigued that they will feel compelled to purchase the product or offer. Let your copy be as long as it needs to be, to effectively get your point across.

  3. Finally, remember that selling is based on emotion, so be clear and persuasive in your copy. Think for your prospect; build on their faith in your company, product and service. Do not allow your Copy to let the prospect think, because logical reasoning leads to procrastination and spells doom for your sales.

I hope you found these copywriting basics useful, and that they will help you write outstanding Copy to achieve your goals.
